We will see

Demnach war es nicht so schlimm. Gott sei Dank!

Hurricane Wilma Updates (Oct. 24 4 p.m.)
sp-10.gif
The Emergency Management team presented its preliminary damage assessment at a noon briefing at the Cape Coral Emergency Operations Center. The City’s Emergency Management head, Fire Chief Bill Van Helden, said the city endured tropical-force winds with gusts at hurricane levels, and damage appears to be far less than that caused by Hurricane Charley. He said Cape damage appears minor -- principally downed trees and power lines.</SPAN>

Key updates
The City is imposing a curfew tonight from 9pm until 6am, the same hours as the Lee County curfew. Officials said widespread power outages are a primary reason.

The State Emergency Response Team will open the Cape’s only Point of Distribution for emergency food and water at High Tech North, 360 Santa Barbara Blvd. North, Cape Coral, FL 33993. Hours are noon – 5:00 pm Tuesday 10/25 and 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Wednesday10/26 and Thursday 10/27. No identification is required. The center will distribute ice, water and MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) until supplies are exhausted or the need is fulfilled.
Evacuees from both the mandatory and voluntary evacuation areas in Cape Coral may return immediately. At this time, Cape Coral police are not requiring returnees to display identification.

Police are maintaining their double shift schedule through the night, providing nearly twice as many officers normally on duty.
Tonight, the Fire Department will patrol the city looking for home generators to ensure they are being used safely. Generators pose a substantial health risk due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. The department will hand out a flier that describes generator safety.

The city’s water system was successfully maintained without interruption throughout the storm by generator power. There is no need for residents to boil water.
Both of the designated shelters in Cape Coral, Diplomat Elementary and Mariner Middle schools, were emptied by mid afternoon and will be closed tonight.

Garbage pickup by Waste Management will resume tomorrow, Tuesday, on the Holiday Schedule; meaning pickups are delayed by one day.
The City of Cape Coral Charter School will be closed to classes Tuesday. Teachers may voluntarily report to their classrooms for planning.

LCEC is currently assessing the wide-spread damage within its service territory. As soon as the assessment is complete, crews will restore and repair main power lines that serve hospitals and essential services. Next priority will be smaller lines that serve neighborhoods. Residents with downed lines that appear life threatening should report them immediately to the police department which is in direct contact with LCEC.
Homeowners with wells and no electricity can take their own containers and obtain potable water from any fire station.

Fire and building inspectors are surveying Cape businesses to assess physical damage. The Economic Development Office, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, the Cape Coral Construction Industry Association and the Community Redevelopment Area, will conduct a damage census, to identify specific needs, including low interest loans for repairs and operating capital.
The City’s Risk Manager will be assessing damage to city property.

Media are welcome to ride along with inspectors, fire and police personnel as they conduct assessments and distribute generator safety information. Contact PIO below.
The Citizen’s Action Center will remain open until midnight tonight 10/24. It will resume operation at 7:00 am Tuesday 10/25. The telephone number is 574-0425

Wieder da! :001: :001:
